In order to really understand Patti Smith’s work, it’s necessary to know a little bit about the artists who influenced her. Jean Genet (1910–86): A French author who spent much of his youth as a criminal and male prostitute. His 1944 novel, Notre-Dame-des-Fleurs, caused a great sensation with its tales of homosexuality and crime. His subsequent novels also explored various aspects of the underworld using a very pessimistic and mystical style.

Jean-Luc Godard (1930–): A French film director and one of the leaders of new wave filmmaking in the 1950s.

Anna Karina (1940–): A French actress who often worked with her husband, Jean-Luc Godard.

Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920): An Italian painter and sculptor who often created nude images that were scandalous for his day. It was only after he died (of tuberculosis) that his art was recognized as revolutionary.

Arthur Rimbaud (1854–91): A gay French poet partial to drinking and bawdy behavior, Rimbaud’s work first attracted attention while he was still in his teens. In 1870, he published Le Bateau ivre, a collection of writings full of evocative imagery and wild symbolism. After turning his back on literature at 19, he wandered Europe working as a soldier and gun-runner. He died of a leg infection after an amputation.
